Description of the programme/policy
The Waste management strategy is a basic document that assesses the state of waste management, determines the long-term goals of waste management and provides conditions for rational and sustainable waste management at the level of the Republic of Srpska. Although Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), i.e. the RS do not yet have the obligation to apply the goals from the European directives concerning the area of waste management, the set requirements and standards of the EU should be gradually incorporated into the legislation of the Republic related to this area. By harmonising the legal and by-laws of the Republic with European directives, the foundations will be laid for the establishment of an appropriate waste management system throughout the territory of the Republic in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and environmental protection.
Main objective of the programme/policy
The goal of the Waste Management Strategy is to enact by-laws that would regulate the management of all categories of waste in the Republic in detail and harmonise the legislation of the Republic with the EU legislation, taking into account and
strategic determination of the Republic.
Specific objective of the programme/policy
Other objectives of the Strategy are the establishment of an information system for collecting data on quantities
of waste, the development of a sustainable waste management system based on the principles of environmental protection with the implementation of education at all levels of society and the economy, increasing the coverage of households with organised waste collection, increasing the separate collection of waste and recycling, rehabilitating existing and wild landfills, rehabilitating “black spots”, building appropriate facilities for the treatment / disposal of waste.
