Description of the programme/policy

The programme for the control and prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases in Montenegro is a programme aimed at reducing the burden caused by diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory diseases. The programme focuses on health promotion, early detection, effective treatment, and management of these diseases.

Main objective of the programme/policy

The goal of the Programme is to reduce the number of premature deaths and significantly decrease the burden of illness and disability from leading non-communicable diseases. This will be achieved through:

  1. Creating a socio-economic and environmental environment that promotes the elimination or reduction of exposure of the population of Montenegro to risk factors for the most important non-communicable diseases through the adoption of healthy lifestyles.
  2. Improving and strengthening the healthcare system of Montenegro to enhance effectiveness and efficiency in the field of specific prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment of non-communicable diseases.

Specific objective of the programme/policy

  1. Management and supervision, monitoring, and evaluation aimed at the better implementation of the Programme
  2. Health promotion – advocating for health and engaging the community in order to eliminate or reduce exposure to behavioural risk factors
  3. Legal regulations – preparation of amendments and revisions
  4. Early detection and appropriate effective treatment
