Each year, the European Week of Sport encourages more active and healthier lifestyles across Europe and beyond. This year’s edition took place from 23 to 30 September, promoting the values of the European Union and the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Led by the European Commission, the initiative is largely decentralised, with events held across Europe in collaboration with national coordinators and a variety of committed partners. The Week has expanded beyond Europe, with countries from the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnerships also participating. All Western Balkans partners are included in the European Week of Sport Beyond Borders since 2018
In total, 15 million people took part in over 50,000 activities organised by sport federations, local clubs, schools, and sports organisations. Participants had the chance to join in various games, hikes, swims, and other activities, discovering the physical activities that best fit their preferences and lifestyles.
This year’s European Week of Sport was a tremendous success, highlighting how sport can positively impact lives, improve well-being, and foster a sense of community. A highlight video showcasing the best moments from the events is available, celebrating the collective energy and effort of all participants in promoting the EU’s values of solidarity and inclusion.

Background Information
The European Week of Sport, launched in 2015, was created to address the increasing issue of inactivity across Europe. It promotes participation in sport and physical activity while raising awareness of the numerous benefits these bring to individuals and society. The lack of physical activity negatively affects both public health and the economy. Additionally, sport has the power to promote tolerance, strengthen citizenship, and foster social inclusion across Europe. Despite growing research highlighting the role of sport in enhancing wellbeing and contributing to a vibrant, inclusive society, levels of physical activity are stagnating and even declining in some EU Member States. The European Week of Sport seeks to tackle these challenges and encourage more active lifestyles.
