Horizon 2020 was the name of the 8th EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation with active calls between 2014-2020 (projects funded by the programme run beyond 2020 depending on their project runtime). Horizon 2020 tackled societal challenges by helping to bridge the gap between research and the market by, for example, helping innovative enterprise to develop their technological breakthroughs into viable products with real commercial potential and was structured around 3 pillars:
- Excellent Science
- Competitive Industries
- Better Society
All Western Balkans were associated to Horizon 2020, except Kosovo (which became fully associated to the successor programme Horizon Europe, 2021-2027 for the first time).
