The fifth Erasmus+ call for proposals supports the further rollout of the European Universities initiative, allowing an expansion to at least 60 European Universities by mid-2024, in line with the European strategy for universities.
About the call
This latest Erasmus+ call for proposals comes with a total budget of €189,2 million.
It runs from 3 October 2023 to 6 February 2024.
The call will allow the European Universities initiative to expand to at least 60 European Universities alliances with more than 500 universities by 2024.
It is delivering on one of the flagship initiatives of the European strategy for universities [pdf].
Apply
The call is an open competitive call based on qualitative criteria.
New alliances are eligible to apply. In addition, one important novelty is the opportunity to set up a Community of Practice of European Universities to support closer cooperation.
Structure of the call
The call is structured around two topics:
Topic 1: development of deep institutional transnational cooperation
This call topic will provide support for applicants wishing to establish deep institutional transnational cooperation between higher education institutions in a ‘European Universities’ alliance.
Topic 2: Community of practice for European Universities alliances
This call topic will provide support to create a collaborative and supportive environment where European Universities alliances can come together to share good practices and experiences within the community of European Universities alliances, as well as for the benefit of the wider higher education sector.
About the initiative
The 2024 Erasmus+ European Universities call will support deeper institutional transnational cooperation between higher education institutions. It builds on the success of the calls launched in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Erasmus+ currently supports 50 alliances gathering more than 430 higher education institutions from all over Europe.
European Universities alliances have diverse models of systemic, structural and sustainable transnational cooperation which reinforce the quality, performance, attractiveness and international competitiveness of higher education across Europe, for the benefit of their students and staff, while promoting our democratic values.
European Universities can better solve societal challenges by pushing further the boundaries of higher education transnational cooperation. They strengthen quality and relevance for future-proof skills, equip young people, lifelong learners and researchers with the right competences and skills for the green and digital transitions and for becoming the innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow, while having a positive impact on their innovation ecosystems and communities.
The 2024 call aims to deliver on the ambitious objectives set through:
- Council Conclusions on the European Universities initiative from 17 May 2021 [pdf]
- European strategy for universities and the related Council Conclusions on a European strategy empowering higher education institutions for the future of Europe
- new European Innovation Agenda
